When couples first visit a jewellers to buy their wedding rings they can be overwhelmed by the sheer number of styles on offer. Even plain gold bands are available in countless combinations of shape, size and colour. Luckily there are a few simple guide lines to help you choose the right ring for you.
First take a good look at your engagement ring. In most countries the wedding and engagement rings are worn on the same finger (wedding ring first) so it’s important the two rings suit each other.
Your wedding ring will usually need to be a slightly larger size than your engagement ring. When you have your finger measured remember, fingers tend to swell as they get hotter, so don’t buy a ring that’s a bit tight on a cold day.
Most Jewellers recommend you choose wedding and engagement rings of the same metals, for example the same carat gold. When you wear two rings against each other they literally wear against each other, if the rings are made of different metals one ring will eventually wear the other away.
When jewellers talk about the ‘carat’ of a gold ring they are referring to the amount of pure gold in the metal. Carat is an ancient measuring system simply meaning parts per twenty four. 18ct gold contains eighteen parts per twenty four (75%) of pure gold.
